My Story

At the age of 16 my mother, two younger siblings, and I, immigrated from Mexico to the USA.

We arrived not knowing the norms of this new place and not having an understanding for what we were feeling or experiencing when facing so many unknowns.

We were expected to quickly speak a new language, to fit in, and not have an accent (spoiler alert - to this day, I have undoubtedly failed!). As a teenager I was desperate to be accepted and I did everything to try and fit in, yet in this process, I was letting go of my identity and all that brought me joy and comfort. I also became my family’s cultural broker, helping my mum with translations and making sense of this new world.

My family members all responded differently to survive in the face of this overwhelming transition. For example my mother was searching to stay in close proximity to what was familiar to her in her telenovelas and Mexican recipes.

As a psychotherapist, I have since found the words and theoretical concepts to organise and understand what I/we experienced in the migration process. Moreover, through my years of experience working with immigrants and refugees it has become absolutely clear that these experiences and challenges were far from unique to my family.

It is now my life’s work to take my childhood role of cultural broker in a new direction - bridging gaps in understanding of mental health professionals & organisations, and inspiring them to broaden their cultural lens. I work tirelessly to nurture deeper understanding and empathy towards mental health in relation to global migration. I hope you will join me in reshaping the immigration narrative and building bridges so that immigrants are recognized as strong, brave, kind humans that courageously navigate big risks every day.
